This staged photograph taken on November 2, 2026 in Paris shows an AFP employee posing in front of screens displaying a petition which surpassed 500,000 signatures on the website of the National Assembly, French Parliament lower house, calling for the closure of French TV broadcaster CNews, a channel part of conservative French billionaire Vincent Bollore's group often described as France's answer to Fox News. Accusations that CNews promotes far-right views and themes gained further traction following the racist attack in Trappes on 23 October, in which a 39-year-old Frenchman, Kévin T., is suspected of having deliberately shot at "people (...) of Muslim, African or North African appearance", according to the national anti-terrorism prosecutor. Some on the left have accused the media, and CNews in particular, of bearing some responsibility for this attack by giving too much airtime to rhetoric that stigmatises immigrants or people from immigrant backgrounds.
